The commercial application of SmartFreshSM to apples has increased significantly over the last five years and is now a recognised technology in the South African deciduous fruit industry and worldwide. While the cost of treating fruit in bins is comparable to controlled atmosphere storage and some advanced MAP technologies, ways in which to become more cost effective in the use of SmartFreshSM are always under the spotlight. The question has frequently been asked whether or not SmartFreshSM can be applied to packed apples for two main reasons, first, to lower application cost of treating fruit not destined for export, and second, to facilitate treatment in the transit chain. On occasion, where packed fruit require extended storage, a second re-treatment may be required and fruit in this instance may be in packed palletised cartons.

This research focused on the fine-tuning the determination of optimum harvest maturity of African Delight plums intended for export by sea. The specific requirement was to reduce the risk of the progressive cold storage disorder, referred to as skin scald or skin browning. It was established that in addition to the standard 9 kg flesh firmness and 15% total soluble solids that signify the start of the picking window; the optimum maturity can be more accurately assessed if skin scald development during cold storage is considered a risk.

In a previous article, we reported on the variation in forced-air cooling rates in grape boxes dependant on the position in the pallet stack, location of pallets in the cooling tunnel, the us of perforated bags and how this information can be used in the selection of monitoring positions to avoid low temperature during cooling.

This feedback is a follow up on an earlier article where it was proposed that Forelle pears, in selected orchards, be held on the trees for 2 or 3 weeks past the typical commercial harvest date and the be subjected to a SmartFresh application to prevent ripening.

De Kock, V.A., 2019, ‘Comparison of standard 11-mm penetrometer plungers against 8-mm plungers to establish the optimum harvest maturity of late season nectarines using flesh firmness as indices’, SA Fruit Journal, Feb – March, 62 – 68.

 

 

The aim was to establish if 8-mm plungers rather than 11-mm plungers can assist to determine the harvest maturity of late season nectarines more accurately. These cultivars are typically firm at harvest and may crack when the larger plunger penetrates the fruit, thus rendering the reading inaccurate. The 8-mm plunger gave good results and it was found that a division factor of 1.8 can be used to convert existing 11-mm standards to 8-mm. An industry wide dispensation was granted to use penetrometers fitted with 8-mm plungers for a range of listed cultivars.
